You might be wondering, “Why are you going on about a phone that looks almost identical to last year’s S22 Ultra?” It’s true that visually the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra looks like a carbon copy of the S22 Ultra, but if you look closer at the spec sheet, then this phone is in a completely different ball league. 

Now, if you are a more casual fan of Samsung mobile phones, then you won’t really care about the camera specs of the phone, and then you won’t really care as long as you get a good phone. However, if you’re a photographer or someone who plans on using the camera of the phone a lot, then hold on to your hat because the S23 Ultra camera is going to blow it away.

Here are some of the interesting features of the S23 Ultra camera.

1. 200 MP Main Camera Lens

Now, the first thing that you’ll notice in the camera module of this phone is its massive 200 MP primary camera lens😱. Yup! That’s right, Samsung has taken out the big guns. In their last year’s smartphone, they released a massive 108 MP camera lens, but it doesn’t even come close to this beast of a camera.

One thing that I need to clarify is that a higher number of pixels doesn’t normally mean a better image quality. Don’t get me wrong, it does have better quality when it comes to cameras in a smartphone, but it isn’t simply because it has higher pixels. The main reason why the image quality of the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is how the phone uses the pixels. 

Individually, the pixels might not look that good in low light, but by default, the S23 Ultra uses a process called “Binning,” where the phone image is divided into different boxes that contain multiple pixels. The phone uses the information obtained from those collective pixels to make the end result much sharper and improve the overall quality of the picture.

You can take 200 MP pictures if you really want to zoom into the picture to look at finer details. However, you need to make sure you have an abundance of light around you because otherwise, the pixels will just create noise in the picture.

2. Twice the OIS Range

For some, OIS or Optical Image Stabilization might not be on a list of priorities because they’ll be using a stand or some other means. However, believe me when I say that the stabilization on this phone is on a completely different level. 

Normally, the purpose of the OIS tech is to give your camera lens some adjusting room. In other words, when you are filming or taking a picture, you need to keep the phone steady, so enough light can get in the camera lens to capture an amazing picture. 

These days, many smartphones have OIS tech in their camera lenses. My personal favorite was the new iPhone 14 Pro Max, but the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has taken the lead. I’ve seen some people who walked down the stairs while recording on the S23 Ultra, and the video was so stable that it felt like they were gliding over the stairs. 

Fun fact, the people in the video were also shooting with a secondary camera to show the difference and let me say it was clear as day.

3. 8K Video Recording

Now, this is a feature that many of you have heard of or seen in many other Samsung mobile phones, but this one takes the cake when it comes to actually delivering 8K videos. The fact that I mentioned the previous Samsung phone is very important because even though the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G could record in 8K, the frame rate for it was a bit low. The S22 Ultra could only record videos at 24 FPS. Even though this frame rate isn’t bad, it also isn’t that good.

That’s why Samsung really took the 8K aspect of the phone and ran with it. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra can capture an 8K video in 30 FPS. This is a huge jump from the 24 FPS that the S22 Ultra was able to muster up.

That’s not all because the 8K video recorded on S23 Ultra also has a much better field of view. What I mean by that is that in the S22 Ultra, the video looked a lot more cropped than normal. However, in S23 Ultra, the view is expanded, and it can capture much better videos.

Plus, with all the features that I mentioned before, the 8K recording is going to be on a completely different scale than before.

Should You Buy the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

So, with the important camera features having been laid out, the next big question to ask is, “Should I buy the S23 Ultra just for the camera’s sake?” This question stems from the fact that most people are put off by the fact that the Samsung S23 Ultra is identical to last year’s model. However, what they don’t know is that the S23 is a significant improvement over its predecessor.

That’s why if you ask me if you should buy the S23 Ultra or not, my answer is going to be “Yes.” The camera of this phone is so much better than that particular aspect of the phone alone; I’m going to recommend it to those who want to buy it.
